The Ultimate Day Trip Guide: Lombok to Gili Trawangan

Lombok Vibess Team

Known for its vibrant marine life, car-free streets, and laid-back party atmosphere, Gili Trawangan (or "Gili T") is an essential part of any Lombok itinerary. Here’s how to do it right on a day trip.

Getting There: Boat Options and Ports

Your primary departure point from Lombok is Bangsal Harbor. You have two main options:

  • Public Boat: This is the most economical choice. The boat leaves once it has enough passengers (around 40 people) and the journey takes about 30-45 minutes. Be prepared for a bustling, authentic local experience.
  • Fast Boat or Private Charter: For more speed and flexibility, fast boats operate from Bangsal or private operators can be found at Teluk Nare or Teluk Kodek. While more expensive, you can set your own schedule, which is ideal for a day trip.

Aim to depart from Lombok early (around 8-9 AM) to maximize your time on the island.

Must-Do Activities on Gili T

1. Snorkeling with Sea Turtles

Gili T is famous for its resident green sea turtles. Head to the northeast side of the island (Turtle Point) where you can often spot them feeding on seagrass just a short swim from the beach. You can rent snorkel gear from countless stalls along the main strip.

2. Cycle Around the Island

With no motorized vehicles, bicycles are the best way to explore. A leisurely ride around the entire island takes about 60-90 minutes. It's a fantastic way to discover hidden beaches and quieter spots away from the main harbor area.

3. Swing Over the Ocean

No trip to the Gilis is complete without a photo on one of the iconic ocean swings. You'll find them dotted along the western coast, perfectly positioned for sunset views (though still beautiful during the day).

Where to Eat Lunch

The main street facing the harbor is lined with restaurants offering everything from Indonesian classics to Western fare. For a great beachfront vibe, check out places like The Banyan Tree for healthy smoothie bowls or Scallywags Organic Seafood Bar & Grill for fresh catches.

Heading Back to Lombok

Be mindful of the time! The last public boat from Gili Trawangan back to Bangsal typically departs around 4:30 PM. Confirm the schedule as soon as you arrive. If you miss it, your only option will be a more expensive private charter.
